Fields’ practical principles in analysing television

Unitise the content (break into sections such as speaker-to-speaker, shot-by-shot, sequence-by-sequence or scene-by-scene).

Transcribe (write down what was said and shown).

Code (tag and label analytic comment and own reaction, categories may emerge as you watch—in that case backtrack to apply these also).

Analyse the elements (expressions, scene, music, graphic, sound effect, verbal content—look for themes that recur).

Generate alternatives (look at other possible symbols, news versions, plot scenarios, to develop a sense of the omitted and the alternative).

Describe interplay of the elements (how the elements work together, for what effect. Look for themes—see Miles and Huberman, 1984.).

Explanation (review appropriate theories for cinema and television discourse).
